What does prohibition have to do with NASCAR? Many people do not know the fascinating history behind car racing. Back in the prohibition days when alcohol was illegal, “runners” became popular for their modified vehicles. Runners were individuals who delivered contraband alcohol, usually home-made moonshine, from brewers to establishments. Runners modified their vehicles so they could outrun federal law enforcement or tax agents seeking to disrupt their operation. Among this lucrative, albeit illegal business, a counterculture of informal street races began as a way to display the modifications of runners’ vehicles.
These races continued to rule until they grew into an organized sport. The growth is credited to Big Bill France, who organized first official National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (Nascar) event in Daytona Beach, Florida on December of 1947. Specifically, Big Bill France brought together drivers, owners of modified vehicles, and mechanics to finally establish some order and standard rules for racing. Within two months of this meeting, an official race was held that incorporated these rules. This was the first ever Nascar race. It was held on February 15, 1948 and the winner was Ford-driving Red Byron. By the end of February 1948, the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing was incorporated. Big Bill France was elected the leader of Nascar.
